The above interview for Nation Online is worth a watch.

After listening to the interview, I’m sure most people will agree that Malawi has many potential leaders with brilliant ideas. And many of the exceptional ones don’t have a political record (or if they do, it’s not tarnished by political stints from the past).
The unfortunate thing is that because of a whole number of reasons, these people are not sufficiently empowered to successfully launch a national presidential campaign. Further, considering the tribalistic politics we still have in Malawi, they do not have widespread support amongst the voting population across the whole country.
It’s another reason why I believe, Malawi needs a Federal System of Governance, because all this talent, instead of wasting resources vying for the presidential position, can be deployed in the districts, to compete at building the country… farms, small scale manufacturing, education, etc.
The system would then ensure that those who emerge most successful from the nation-building endeavours in the districts (having created regional examples of productivity and excellence), would have the undeniable track record of success that catapults them to the national stage.
