A degree of Sympathy…(for Refugees)

It’s because some people do not regard refugees (or indeed non-white people) as being the same, as being human, as being deserving of peace, happiness, or compassion, or as being on the same “level” as them.

Remember when the war in Ukraine started and there were those people who said Ukrainians “are just like us” and were very happy to welcome hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians into the UK?

Well, if you’re from Zambia, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Somalia or Iran, that welcoming spirit, that same empathy, that same degree of sympathy, that ‘grace’ is not extended to you, because … to put it in their own language “you’re not like us“. You don’t look like us, you don’t believe in the same things that we do…your culture is different from ours…etc, etc…

It’s the same attitude with what’s happening in Palestine. If the Palestinians who have endured horrible treatment for decades had been white / Caucasian, I have serious doubts that the tragic level of death and destruction, the needless loss of thousands of people (including women and children) that has happened would have been tolerated.

It’s racism. Plain and simple.
