Someone please find out how much money Africans are spending holidaying abroad every year? In New York, in Dubai, in London, Paris, Rome, Shanghai and other cities regarded as great holiday spots…
Why am I asking this question?
Well, at a time when our governments not only in Malawi, but also in other countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe are struggling to raise funds…and donors are walking away, you have to wonder what other sources of income can stabilise our economies?
While I acknowledge that many Africans are reluctant to spend money in Africa because of factors including (1) Poor quality of facilities & bad customer service (2) Image problems – there’s less glamour in a honeymoon in Lusaka as opposed to a honeymoon in Paris, … and (3) Corruption, I think if our governments can begin to seriously tackle corruption, and to provide increased security, it’s in our best interest as Africans to spend our resources on the continent and begin to demand better facilities in hotels and the resorts across Africa.
A few years ago, my idea of a holiday on a small budget was either a tour of Cuba, Brazil, or a country like Malaysia. These days I’m beginiing to ask how many of us Africans have ventured into Cameroon, into Tanzania, how many of us have truly explored Ethiopia, Rwanda or Zimbabwe, how many of us know Malawi? Instead of taking selfies in Qatar, shouldn’t we be using our resources to support our own African businesses, in Kenya, Ethiopia and Lesotho? Businesses which need those funds more than the large and rich hotel chains in Paris or Qatar?
Don’t get me wrong, obviously its your money and you can spend it as you wish. Further, I’m not preaching down at anyone because I’m equally guilty of this practice; in 2007, instead of heading out to Africa, I found it easier and cheaper to visit France, where in a week long break myself and a friend spent ~£900 on flights, hotels, transportation (within France), and on food. In 2010, I spent £1500 going to Shanghai and Chengdu for just over a week to look for ‘business opportunities’, when I should infact have gone to Nairobi or Johannesburg… or some other emerging African city…
These days I’m reformed, these days I’m understanding that the reason our countries in Africa do not have resources is because of a collection of poor decisions which collectively deprive our countries of money with which to use on development. And I’m as equally guilty of making some of those poor decisions. Thus with such a realisation, it is only normal to wonder why many of us are not spending money in Africa.
I’ll leave you with a story (which sounds like fiction) but which I think has some important lessons:-
INTERVIEWER: Why are blacks so behind Economically?
JEWISH LEADER:The only aspect blacks understand is Consumption. Blacks don’t understand the importance of building wealth.
The fundamental rule is to keep your money within your racial group. We build Jewish business, hire Jewish, buy Jewish and spend Jewish.
There is nothing wrong with that but it is a basic rule blacks cannot comprehend and follow;
“He kills his fellow blacks daily instead of wanting to see his fellow black do well” 93% of blacks killed in America are by other blacks.
Their leaders steal from their people and send the money back to their colonial master from whom they borrow the same money from.
Every successful black want to spend his money in the country of his colonial masters.
They go on holiday abroad, buy houses abroad, school abroad etc instead of spending this money in their own country to benefit their people.
Statistics show that the Jew’s money exchanges hands 18 times before leaving his community while for blacks it is probably a maximum of once or even zero.
Only 6% of black money goes back into their community. This is why Jews are at the top and blacks are at the bottom of every ladder of society.
Instead of buying Louis Vuitton, Hermes, expensive cars, shoes, houses, dresses etc, blacks could industralize Africa, build banks and get rid of colonial institutions by putting them out of business.
INTERVIEWER:Your thoughts on failure of blacks after 150yrs?
JEWISH LEADER:Well, nothing is ever the blackmans fault. His compulsive habit of killing his own, compulsive material consumption.
His inability to build businesses or preserve wealth are usually somebody else’s fault.
INTERVIEWER: So what can blacks do to liberate themselves
JEWISH LEADER: Blacks must take responsibility. Blacks must unite.
And vehemently fight corrupt leaders who run down their country and run to IMF as though IMF is Father Christmas.
