Where are the Jobs for all these graduates?

If you follow news about Malawi you’ll know that a few weeks ago, students in Malawian Universities were graduating from their programs.

On twitter, there was a lot of excitement and beautiful pictures between 13th and 15th March as students were congratulated and basked in the well-deserved achievement of finally finishing their degree programs.

But away from the celebrations, some people were asking the question: where will all these graduates work? Where are the jobs for them to work in, within Malawi?

It’s a legitimate question which needs contemplating on, because although the unemployment rate has been decreasing the last few years, most analysts agree that the business environment in Malawi isn’t great for inward investment at the moment. Which probably means many of these graduates will be looking at the public sector for jobs. Or in NGOs.

But does the public sector (or NGOs) have enough jobs to absorb all, or at least most of them?

Maybe, a different tactic is required, to help recent graduates find employment or access further training. Or to supplement the government’s initiatives of job creation.

Students in an educational establishment

What if it were possible to establish a Knowledge Transfer program at the Ministries of Education  and Foreign Affairs in Malawi, with certain universities across the world?

What I mean is developing partnerships with universities that have training programs in leadership or basic business studies in Norway, Lithuania, Turkey and Brazil?

Why? Well, so that each year 30 Malawian graduates can be sent to each of these countries for a year or two, to study in these programs, and gain some practical skills. It wouldn’t be a frictionless exercise, but I think such a thing is possible…
