A bit of History: The Manchester Guardian

Manchester Guardian via Spartacus Education

Quote from the piece:

“”It will zealously enforce the principles of civil and religious Liberty, it will warmly advocate the cause of Reform; it will endeavour to assist in the diffusion of just principles of Political Economy.”

With frequent reports that a well-known Malawian online newspaper is being financed by at least one political party in Malawi, in exchange of media support for that party and less criticism, a bit of history shows just how rough and tumultuous the journey for a newspaper can be, even for one that is now considered to be a stalwart internationally.

Having said that, it’s  a shame to see a newspaper compromise its founding principles ( assuming there were any) for monetary gain or political favours.
