Some days I write for the children of today, who are the citizens of tomorrow. Some days I write for those who will be in charge in the future. I write about what their fathers and grandfathers are doing. What their uncles and aunties are tolerating. What’s been happening in this country for a long time. And how when it is their turn – they should never behave in the same manner.
Sometimes I just can’t write for the present at all, because too few in the present understand. Or care. And those who understand , and care, have no power – at the moment – to change anything.
A few days ago, this story emerged on MBC Digital:

And as is always the case, there was the usual temporary outrage. You know, the kind that takes place on a single day, maybe a day and a half, two days max. Before absolutely nothing else happens at all. That type of temporary outrage. Which doesn’t set off an inquiry. Which doesn’t ignite an investigation. Nor stop the deal altogether.
But if you are wondering what is wrong with this story, please let me break it down for you below.

Do you get it now?
They spent a clearly inflated £148,000 on a truck and skips, when they could have spent… say £60,000 on three trucks and the same number of skips, or more, plus the cost of shipping being included.
That’s how resources are wasted in Malawi. And that’s how corruption is dressed up in procurement in Malawi. Goods inflated many times their ordinary price, without any clear explanation why. Today it’s a skip loader, yesterday it was tarpaulins at Admarc:

Can you now see the pattern? Can you see what is wrong in this country?
This didn’t start in 2026, it’s what’s been happening for a long long time. And guess what, almost always – no one gets to answer for it…
So, when i say I’m writing for the future. That’s the reason why. Because the citizens in charge today, are either complicit in the malpractices, they idly watch the shenanigans taking place, or have utterly failed to fix their country.
